One of the areas where the effects of aging are seen the most is the periorbital area. Aging, busy pace of life, and hereditary effects can cause an undesired appearance around our eyes. Due to the effects of time and gravity, there will be excess skin, sagging, loosening and bags on out eyelids as they have the thinnest skin on out body. This loose tissue contains eyelid skin, muscle and adipose tissue. Blepharoplasty is the operation during which a strip from the lower/upper eyelid or both eyelids and skin or subcutaneous muscular/adipose tissue is extracted.
Is post-op hospital stay after blepharoplasty necessary? How long is the post-op recovery period?
The operation may be carried out in hospital environment as to whether the lower or upper eyelid or both eyelids will be operated. Typically, blepharoplasty operations are carried out in outpatient conditions and under local anesthesia. There is no need for a hospital stay.
Will there be an apparent scar after blepharoplasty?
Medical scars recover quite easily and without problem on thin-skinned areas. The scars on the eyelids thus become very imperceptible in a matter of months.
How long will the effects of blepharoplasty last for?
The period of effectiveness for all operations changes according to genetic and environmental factors. Factors such as anatomy, skin quality, exposure to sun etc. effects the positive results of the operations.
What is the duration of blepharoplasty operation?
Upper eyelid operation takes approximately 1 hour. Lower eyelid operation may take longer due to both the procedures on anatomical structures and to the technique used. The duration of the operation may be approximately two hours. Operations during which both eyelids are operated can take 3 to 3,5 hours.
How should the preparation process for blepharoplasty be?
Considering the thinness of the skin of the eyelids, it is crucial for our patients to stop using anticoagulant medication and smoking at least 2 weeks before the operation. Skin quality impairing factors such as tanning or solarium should also be avoided. Alcohol consumption should be stopped for at least one week prior to the operation as well, as it may cause edema formation.
